Class of 1968 reports,
by Larry Keeno and Tsarkie
Our annual mini-reunion, held as usual on the last Friday in July, consisted of a golf event at the Coral Creek course in Ewa and an evening gathering of golfers and non-golfers at the Saint Louis Alumni Clubhouse. At the gathering and from now on, your reunion committee is soliciting suggestions and ideas for our major 35th reunion coming up in 2003.
Past activities include our "field trip" to Seattle in Summer 2000. Five classmates from the islands with their spouses reunited with the Northwest "boys." Traveling from Hawaii were Bryan and Donna Nakasone, Tsarkie and Kathy Tsark, Bo and Debbie Mahoe, Mike and Sylvia Kop, Larry and Peggy Keeno. Ken and Diane Dzombar brought son Glenn and daughter Katie from Herndon, VA.
We were grandly hosted by Orlando and Laurel Manaois, Henry and Jan Chock, Fel and Susan Abille, Tony and Charlee Olim and Reb and Stacey Ribellia, who arranged to have goodie baskets of Northwest delights waiting for us in our rooms at the Seattle Inn. We had a wonderful weekend with Henry and Jan showing us around old Seattle and the Underground Tour, Orlando and Laurel hosting us for brunch at their lovely home, Fel and Susan driving us around in their RV, and Tony and Charlee transporting us from here to there.
Our first official gathering was Friday night a Ivar's Acres of Clams on the Seattle waterfront that included surprise guests, Fel's brother Robin '72 and Derek Hookano '69, brother of our classmate Glenn. On Saturday we had dinner at McCormack's Fish House and Bar, formerly managed by our classmate Peter Aprecio. Pete took a new job at Hapuna Beach Hotel on the Big Island, but arranged everything for us and we ate well. Surprise guests were Claude Kane '67 and Bo's mother, Hazel. Sunday, most of us enjoyed the music, crafts and food of the Northwest Folk life Festival at the Seattle Center. Dinner was an all-you-can-eat Dungeness crab feast at Anthony's Home Port in Shilsole.
The Nakasones, Tsarks and Dzombars took an Alaskan cruise, a trip never to be forgotten. The Dzombars went river rafting, while the Tsarks enjoyed a scenic helicopter ride with a couple of landings on glaciers.
Several months after our trip to the Northwest, Orlando and Laurel Manaois visited Honolulu. We were able to put together a gathering for them at the Alumni Clubhouse. Tsarkie and Kathy came to show off their Seattle photo/souvenir album. Then a few months ago, Tony and Charlee Olim visited us. Again, we had a mini-get together at the Clubhouse. Tsarkie tries to notify those on his e-mail about these events. Everyone is invited, so if you want to be informed, give us your e-mail address or telephone number: Keeno at 674-0424 or Tsarkie at 734-4800 or Tsarkie@aol.com.
Classmates also met on March 20 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village as our classmate George Jarrett Helm was inducted into the Saint Louis Gallery of Distinguished Achievers. Kumu John K. Lake spoke proudly of George and asked his classmates to stand. Classmates attending included Jim Nicholson, Francis Raiola, Buddy Los Banos, Larry Keeno, Gary Ito, Chris Pablo, Gary Loo, Jonathan Kane and Tsarkie. The Helm family was delighted to see all of us there.
