Several Class of '47 Members Celebrate 60th Reunion
6th Grade, Class of 1941,

Whoever heard of a reunion from elementary school? When we received a letter last year, which described the plans of the reunion, we hooted. How funny! We thought it was a joke. However, another letter came at Christmas time, and this time we knew it was for real. The Lincoln School Reunion, graduating Class of 1941, was actually going to happen and we set our plans to go.

My husband Merv Ferreira, having missed his Saint Louis School 50th Reunion, Class of '47, was determined to make this reunion. It had been fourteen years since we were in Hawaii. Too long! Roger Lum, SLC '47, picked us up from our Waikiki Hotel the afternoon before the Lincoln School Reunion festivities began and drove us to the Saint Louis Alumni Clubhouse, where we met Harlin Young '59, Bob Takei '58 and other alumni.

The reunion which began on August 10th and continued thru the 12th were three great days. It began with a cocktail party and pupu supper at Dutch Schuman's home in Kailua. The grads enjoyed reminiscing those days of yesteryear and recognizing the child in the adult. Shay Auerbach '47 and Merv celebrated a friendship that goes back to those days at Lincoln School.

Prior to leaving Hawaii, Roger Lum arranged a lunch at Hee Hing's with several other members of the Saint Louis Class of 1947 Shay Auerbach, Donald Hiu, Eddie Medeiros and Walter Lau. Preliminary plans for the Class of 1947's 55th Reunion next year were discussed at lunch, which we're looking forward to return to.

We all met at the old Lincoln School (Linekona) on the next day. Linekona is now the Academy of Art Center and part of the Honolulu Academy of Art across the street. A light misty rain cleared the air and felt delicious. We piled aboard a trolley, which arrived late because the driver went first to the current Lincoln School. He said later that he should have been taking the tour, not giving it, because he learned so much from the 1941 graduates. We marveled at the improvements of the "new waterfront" which were completed since our last visit. Merv gave the trolley driver some of the history of Pier 2, where he lived during the attack of Pearl Harbor. Merv's parents worked for the Immigration Service during that period. After the trolley ride, it was back to school for group photos and presentation of the Class Gift a captain's chair, crafted of Koa wood from Dutch's ranch on the Big Island. We "chowed down" on a buffet lunch prepared by Wally Wok Catering on the patio of Lincoln School. We then reminisced at old memorabilia and class photos in the auditorium prior to an informal program sharing experiences, playing games, and bidding on auction items.

We culminated the reunion with a Sunday Brunch at the Outrigger Canoe Club a perfect ending to three days of fond memories and fun.
