A reunion is a time to reflect on past endeavors and accomplishments that marked pivotal milestones in one's life. Also, it is a reminder that one has a shared history with other people and to settle the infamous question of – “whatever happened to”? For the Class of 1991, nothing characterized us more as a group than the fact that nobody planned a reunion on our 10 th Anniversary back in 2001. And as close as we were-jock, surfers, cruisers, and scholars alike, nobody knew how one should conduct such an event. Our reunion started with a few phone calls by some classmates discussing the possibility of a weekend get-together of festivities to reminisce about the old times spent in Kaimuki. The days we wasted away in Mr. Sadderly's detention period, or listening to the car -"sounds" contests on third row before homeroom. Oh how the times had changed. Nowadays, some of us have become the dreaded disciplinarian of the household issuing "time-out" and more to our children for misdeeds. Better yet, the only sounds competitions may be the ones heard in our communities, not all of which involve music. So it was long over due for a gathering of old friends to just have fun and see how has everyone faired after graduation. The three-day celebration occurred this past Memorial Day weekend with Friday May 28th, marking the start of the events. A boys-night-out at Mai Tai's in Ala Moana Center was planned for 7 pm. (I should have taken Hawaiian Time into consideration). Those who were fashionably late had to run the gauntlet of hugs and handshakes before their first beverages could be sipped. And those evening hours were not enough time to chat about the achievements accrued after graduation or the old times we had shared years ago. On Saturday, those who still continue to fiend on contests played golf while the rest of us waited for the evening barbeque. Card games of skill and chance carried on the spirit of competition and camaraderie instilled by our alma mater. The picnic on Sunday brought family members together while the guys played football, a true St. Louis tradition. The only losers were those of us who are out of shape and will require nursing for aching muscles and joints during the following week. A special thanks goes out to everyone involved-in making this reunion weekend a success. Also, a special thanks goes out to St. Louis High School and its faculty for the daunting task of cultivating boys into gentlemen, we appreciate it. For the rest of the classmates who were unable to attend due to other obligations or because they live, off island, have no fear, this past reunion is just the start of many great times ahead for our, class in which maximum participation is encouraged. Please contact Marty or any other `91 graduate in regards to our next get-together. Marty's email address is kailuacook@yahoo.com. Input into our next reunion is highly welcomed. |
