Aloha and welcome to this year’s first quarter issue of the St. Louis Alumni Association Newsletter. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones in 2008. It seems like just yesterday, that we celebrated our 100th Anniversary of the St. Louis Alumni Association.

2007 will be remembered as the year that SLAA focused on ways to reduce our tax burden, while increasing our financial support through contributions to our beneficiary, Saint Louis School. The Board approved a Finance Committee recommendation to seek the creation of a Charitable Lead Trust, to achieve a vehicle to provide increased financial support of the school, while reducing the amount of taxes that we currently pay.

It was also the first time the SLAA honored the graduating seniors with an introduction to “life after Saint Louis” at “their” Clubhouse and a Luau. Blake Nuibe, chairman of the House & Entertainment Committee greeted the seniors and gave them a tour of our property and Andy Conboy, chairman of the Membership Committee, spoke to the seniors about the benefits of being an active alumnus, as well as the life-long commitment to supporting our alma mater. The spirited men of Saint Louis “cheered” support of the experience and brotherhood experience that they had at Kalaepohaku. This event is now added to the list of “traditions” of the SLAA.

As your Executive Director, it’s my pleasure to assist you and your classmates as you plan your class reunions and class projects. I’ll meet with your committee to discuss your plans and assist you in strategizing your endeavors.

ALUMNI TRADITIONS

Saint Louis School Graduation Ceremony

It’s been a tradition of Saint Louis School to honor the St. Louis Alumni Classes that graduated 50, 60 and 70 years ago at their annual Graduation Ceremony, along with that year’s graduating class. Each member of each alumni class being honored is called to receive a diploma, the traditional red and blue silk lei, commemorative medallions, etc. from the Officials of Saint Louis School. The ceremony and honor bestowed on the alumni classes precede the current graduating class and is a testimony of the history of Saint Louis School. Additionally, the 25th Anniversary Class is also honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for each member of that class.

St. Louis Class Gift

Another tradition, which began many years ago, is the “Class Gift” which is a donation of $50,000 or more to Saint Louis School by the class celebrating its 50th anniversary. This gift of appreciation for the education, guidance and direction that we received at Saint Louis can be a serious burden on the class if not carefully planned and organized well in advance of that milestone. Many classes start their “Class Gift Fund” as early as ten years prior to their 50th Anniversary. In fact the Class of 1992 has already started fund-raising for their “Class Gift Fund” in 2004, thirty-eight years prior to their 50th anniversary. Although this is not the norm, most classes begin as early as ten years and as late as two years prior to their 50th anniversary. The earlier you start your “Class Gift Fund” – the easier it makes for attaining and exceeding your goal. Following is a guideline to launch your “Class Gift” project:

  • Open your Class Gift Account with the Saint Louis School by contacting Mrs. Liza Lee at (808) 739-4774. SLS has non-profit status; therefore donations to the Class Gift Account are tax deductible. SLS will maintain your account and be able to provide periodic reports to the Class Rep, with information on the status of the account, including the individual totals received from any classmate’s contributions to date.
  • Establish a goal for the application of the “Class Gift” to Saint Louis School.
    1. Endowment fund (Permanently held capital of a non-profit organization that the organization manages in a way designed to support ongoing projects and meet institutional opportunities)
    2. Scholarship fund
    3. Campus project or campus gift
  • Provide a deposit document to enable each classmate to establish his personal contribution goal. (Pledge Card)
  • Prepare a letter to each classmate, which announces the “Class Gift Account”. This letter should go out over the signature/s of the leaders (Class Reps) of the class or the well-respected classmate/s in order
to demonstrate sincerity and commitment of purpose.
  • Fund-raising activities should be considered, planned and implemented. A by-product of getting the classmates together for fund-raising activities is camaraderie derived from the fellowship of working together towards a common goal.
  • Consider a way to credit participants who put in a great amount of work on fund-raising activities toward their personal contributions to the “Class Gift Fund”.
  • Adopt sensitivity to hesitation from certain members of a class. Not all of our classmates may agree with this tradition and learn to accept this. It’s not worth it to alienate any member of your class who disagrees with this tradition.
  • Have fun during the process and embrace your goal with optimism.

Clubhouse Utilization

Hall rentals for parties and meetings have picked up since the holidays and room usage for Class meetings continue to increase. Several classes have been meeting at the Clubhouse during the day because the Hall is usually busy during the evenings. Alumni events at the Clubhouse continue to increase as we continue to work towards maximizing the utilization of our Clubhouse.
